Acronyms Explained

Updated: Feb 10, 2021

Regular Unemployment Insurance (UI) Claim

  • Regular UI claim means you have W2 wages that qualifies you to receive unemployment from the state. If you do not qualify you may qualify for the PUA

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA)

  • The PUA is a program for those who do not qualify for regular UI benefits. This includes those who are self-employed, independent contractors, 1099 workers, gig workers, those serving penalty weeks, etc.

Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC)

  • The PEUC is a program for those who exhausted their benefits from their regular UI claims. This provides an additional 13 weeks of benefits.

Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC)

  • The FPUC is an acronym not used very often. This acronym refers specifically to the additional $600 that is added to ALL VALID CLAIMS. If you have a regular UI claim, PUA, or PEUC, the additional 600 will be added to your weekly benefit amount (WBA).

  • The additional 600 only applies to the week ending 4/4/20 and will end 7/25/20

  • Any weeks prior to 4/4/20 DO NOT get the additional $600. So if you were unemployed in March, you will get ONLY your weekly benefit amount (WBA) and not the additional 600 until the week ending in 4/4

  • The HEROES Act is TBD whether or not the additional $600 will extend past 7/25/20

Federal-State Extended Duration (FED-ED)

  • A program that is another extension after the PEUC ends.

Other acronyms:

  • CARES: Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security

  • HEROES: Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions
